Craft- Basket Weaving
Activity: We started this activity off by learning about basketweaving. We learn about the different materials that can be used to make baskets and the different cultures that use baskets. With the different cultures, there are different reasons that they use baskets. After doing the learning, we got to be creative and make our one basket. We started this by doing a pre assessment of weaving by weaving a few pieces of paper together. After that, we go tot start with the basket by taking the cup and making dots not the top. We had to have an odd number of spaces on the top if the cup. (The spaces were the area between the dots). We then had to cut straight down from the dots. That created the tabs that we used to weave. After that, we go to go pick a color and had to get 2 of our wingspan of yarn. We then had to tape the beginning go the yarn inside the cup. Once that was done, we got to start weaving around the cup. We would weave until we got it to the height that we wanted. When you were weaving, you would have to pull the yarn down if it was creating gaps. If you wanted to change color or needed more yarn, you would grab some and then just tie it to the other. After students got done weaving, we were able to decorate our baskets. We had to hot glue the end of the yarn inside and then hot glue the ribbon and handle onto the basket. We were able to decorate it however we wanted to. As the ending, we had to write a few paragraphs. These paragraphs included 3 materials, 3 ways people use baskets, why we chose to create the basket the way we did, and what our cultures are based off the based. For example, I created mine for Easter and I talked about my traditions for Easter. It was fun and very relaxing to create my own basket.
Extension Activity: An extension activity that we could done with basketweaving is creating a social studies lesson that teaches students different cultures. In the presentation, they talked about Native Americans and the ways that they used baskets. You could have an extension activity were they go more in depth with Native Americans. This could be a great starting point to integrating Native Americans into learning for the year. You can talk about them and have students do research to find out more information.
