African Masks
Activity: At the beginning of the class period, we got to learn about African Masks. They had given us some background on African masks, which included things like what they were, why they were used, and the meaning behind them. After that, we got to complete a pre test that had us draw 4 lines of symmetry on some pictures. They we had to draw 2 geometrics shapes and then create a pattern with the 2 geometric shapes. After that, we goto to start to design our masks. They started by having us create our mask on the back of our pre-assessment. After we had a design planned out, we got to transfer it to the construction paper. When we created our mask, we had to have three different design. Mine were the eye lashes, hair, and the pattern of squiggly lines. We also had to have three different parts of the design that was 3-D. Mine were the mouth, nose, and placing it onto the cardboard. After we finished designing the mask on the construction paper, we got to glue it onto the cardboard. we had to fold the sides over a little bit and then glue them down. When we glued them down, we had to make sure that was lifted from the cardboard (make it like a bubble behind it). Lastly, we wrote two facts about African masks on the notecard. We also had to name our mask and put it on the notecard. We glued the notecard to the cardboard. This can fun activity for students.
Extension Activity: An extension activity for this lesson is teaching students about geometric and non geometric shapes. After students have learned about them, you have them include one of each on their African masks. Students are able to use whatever shape that they would like, but would have to keep it symmetrical for the mask.
