Clay- Monster
This is the lesson that Hilary and myself taught.
Activity: We first started out by telling students that we are going to make clay monsters. We inform students that they will need a warm or cool color, add and subtract something, and to name their monster. We also remind that that they want to leave the bottom not painted to let the water release from it. Next, we showed the students some examples of clay monsters. After that, we handed out the pre-assessment which had them name 3 warm color, 3 cool colors, and to sketch their monster. We then started to show the students how to make the monster and let them follow along. We shoed them how to wedge, pinch pot, and slab. After we did that explained to the students how to add and subtract from their monster. We showed them how to slip and score in order to add something to their monster. We then let them be the artist and design a monster however they wanted. While students were designing, we let them listen to a story called ClayMates. After students had designed their monsters. we had them complete a post assessment and a self evaluation. Lastly, we had the students clean up their workspace.
Extension Activity: An extension activity that I think would go well with the clay monsters is having students create a book/story. Students will have to write a story or book about their clay monster. Their story/book has to have some sort of action in it. An example is that students have to say that their clay monster went to the park and then explain the activities that the monster participated in. This can be a fun for students to create a story based off the clay monster that they created and named.
